Message from Wayne Howell

Having taught advanced physical education at the high school level, I have seen firsthand the impact that physical activity can have on youths. Lifting weights give them the confidence to fit in with their classmates that are considered within their ideal weight. It also gives them the stamina to do everyday activities for sustained periods of time and studies have shown that it helps with their academics as well. I can relate to this story because a year ago there was a full figured female student that signed up for my physical fitness class.

This class was only a semester in length and was full of athletes, it took her about 2 months to get comfortable being in the class with the athletes and other females that were slimmer than she was. At that time she asked me to help her with her physical fitness program because she was not pushing herself to improve. I told her I was going to be her personal trainer for the week, and that I was going to push her. I told her she was going to be sore after the workout, on our 2nd day she wanted to quit, but I wouldn’t let her, I told her that the only way to get the soreness out was to keep lifting and not quit.

We eventually finished out the week with no problems, by the end of the semester she was getting the most out of fitness class, when we would have flex Fridays, she would insist on going in the weight room to lift weights, she eventually passed my class with an “A”.  When I saw the student near the end of the 2nd semester, she was more confident  with her outward appearance and also made the B’ honor roll, to this day, I’m inclined to believe that,  that 1st semester physical fitness class had a lot to do with the confidence that this student is now exhibiting.

Obesity puts a strain on individuals, families and communities. By attacking this problem within the schools and in the communities, I feel we can have an immediate impact. This is where Baseline2Baseline comes in.
